Billabong Junior Series celebrates 10th anniversary in 2006
South Africa’s premier surfing series for junior surfers aged 20 and younger will celebrate its 10th successive season in 2006 when the Billabong Junior Series champions are crowned in Jeffreys Bay in August.
The contribution that this series of events has made to the standard of SA surfing is highlighted by the fact that David Weare (Durban), winner of the inaugural series title in 1997, has just qualified to compete alongside the top 44 rated surfers in the world on next year’s ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), the circuit that determines the annual world surfing champion.
And the hundreds of under 12, U14, U16 and Pro Junior (U20) boys and Pro Junior girls from every surfing beach in the country want to emulate the likes of WQS event winners Warwick ‘Wok’ Wright, Ricky Basnett and Daniel Redman, WCT star Travis Logie and international achievers Royden Bryson, Jordy Smith, Damien Fahrenfort and Nikita Robb, all of whom spent their formative years competing on the series.
The five events on the 2006 Billabong Junior Series will be staged at St Michaels-on-Sea on the KSN South Coast, in Durban, Cape Town and Victoria Bay in the Southern Cape before the series champions are crowned at the final event at the legendary Jeffreys Bay, the headquarters of the sponsors.
This schedule enables the country’s future surf stars to meet, mingle with and compete against their peers in a variety of locations around the coast. And with over R200 000 in prize-money on offer, along with invitations to the annual Billabong ASP World Pro Junior Championships in Australia for the top U20 boys and girls, consistently brilliant performances are required to capture the series titles and enjoy the fame and sponsorship deals that follow.
Every competitor is awarded ratings points based on the position they achieve in each event they compete in and the series winners in the five age categories are determined by their accumulating their best four results after the fifth and final event in Jeffreys Bay.
A series prize-pool of R17 500 will be shared by the top three finishers in each division who also share an additional R17 500 provided by First National Bank (FNB) in the form of fixed deposit accounts. FNB also cover the travel costs of those selected to compete in the Billabong World Junior Championships in Australia annually.
Next year’s series will crown new champions in at least three of the five categories as David Brand (U12), Shaun Joubert (U14) and Kyle Lane (U16) have all moved up one age division. However, the Pro Junior boys’ and girls’ champions, Brandon Jackson and Tammy-Lee Smith, will both be determined to capture back-to-back titles and earn another shot at the R300 000 world Pro Junior event in Australia.
Each of the five tournaments features a spectacular Von Zipper Air Show with its winner-takes-all R1 800 purse that goes to the surfer who performs the most radical aerial manoeuvre after ‘boosting’ off the face of the wave and then lands successfully. There is also the Zigzag magazine ‘Blowing-Up’ award of R1 000 and a replica hand grenade trophy for the best performance at each event.
The surfer performing the most innovative manoeuvre during each event receives the ‘Kustomised Manoeuvre’ award of a footwear package from Kustom footwear and all series contests include the Red Bull Wigwam and Energy Centre.
The Billabong Junior Series is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa (SSA), the national controlling body for the sport in this country. The U20 boys’ and girls’ divisions are also sanctioned by ASP Africa and the ratings points earned in the five events in the series count towards the crowning of the annual Pro Surf Tour (PST) Pro Junior titles.
The 2006 Billabong Junior Series starts in St Mikes on the KZN South Coast (February 23-26) before moving to Durban (March 30-April 2), Cape Town (May 18-21), Victoria Bay in the Southern Cape (June 15-18) and wraps up Jeffreys Bay (August 5-8) where the 10th annual series champions will be crowned.
